Bourges Basket put in a battling display at home and beat UMMC Ekaterinburg on Wednesday to stay firmly in the hunt for the EuroLeague Women post-season.

After suffering a couple of narrow defeats in two of their last three games, Valérie Garnier's side knocked off the Russian giants in France, 79-74.

Catherine Joens led Bourges with 18 points and Celine Dumerc poured in 17 against her former team as the winners improved to 4-5.

Sandrine Gruda, UMMC's France international, had 14 points while Maria Stepanova led the Russian outfit with 16.

Joens scored the last five points of the first half, including a three-ball, to knot the game at 37-37.

Stella Kaltsidou then opened the third quarter with a three and a lay-up to put the French club in front to stay.

Joens' three-pointer with 2:10 to go in the third stretched the advantage to 58-47 and Dumerc's three-pointer made it 66-53 two minutes into the last quarter.

UMMC pulled to within four with eight seconds to go but got no closer.

UMMC had most of their success in the paint by making 23 of 48 shots but they failed to capitalize on many of their opportunities at the line.

The Russians hit 22 of their 32 free-throw attempts.

Bourges were eight of 17 from long range, with Joens three of four and Dumerc four of six.

Anete Jekabsone had 15 points in defeat but was just one of six from behind the arc.

UMMC, who out-rebounded Bourges 40-28, dropped to 6-3 with the defeat.
