UMMC Ekaterinburg lowered the boom early and won convincingly against Lotos Gdynia in the EuroLeague Women on Wednesday.
Sandrine Gruda had 15 points to lead UMMC's balanced attack in a 79-56 win in Russia.
The Polish club led the Group A encounter only briefly in the opening minutes.
UMMC, down 6-4, tied the game with Cappie Pondexter's tip-in and then went in front after Yelena Leuchanka sank two free-throws.
Gdynia pulled level one last time as Aneika Henry's jumper made it 8-8.
Olga Arteshina, Anete Jekabsone and Gruda answered with jump shots in a 6-0 spurt that put the Russian team in front to stay.
Ekaterinburg had a vice-like grip on the contest at 35-18 after a 13-4 run that spanned the first six minutes of the second quarter.
Algirdas Paulauskas' side ended up outscoring the visitors 24-11 in the frame for a commanding 46-25 lead at half-time
Gydnia closed to within 13 in the third quarter but UMMC were never in danger of losing control of the game.
Ekaterinburg out-rebounded Gdynia 45-30 and the home side also shot 48.4% from the floor compared to 31.3% for their opponents.
UMMC improved to 6-2 with the victory and dropped Gdynia to 2-6.
Lotos Gdynia Head Coach Javier Fort:
"My congratulations to UMMC. They showed a good game especially in the first half, playing good defense that we could not break. In the second half our main goal was to keep on playing and continue to fight back. After all we could do it and I am proud of our team."
Lotos Gdynia forward Geraldine Robert:
"My congratulations, it was a very good game. UMMC could build a strong defense in the first half. On the other hand we didn't play how we were supposed to, made a lot of mistakes and allowed our opponent to score easy shots. We could not keep on playing as a single team. We tried to fight back but the score difference was too big to cut it down."
UMMC guard Anete Jakabsone:
"I am happy to win this game. We could have won by more than 23 points but made a lot of mistakes and suffered player losses in the last games. We showed a good game playing in defense but we still have a lot of things to improve."
UMMC Head Coach Algirdas Paulauskas:
"It was an interesting and quick game. Both teams kept on fighting till the end and none wanted to give up. There were mistakes, but it always happens during the game. We miss some of our injured players and have to make a lot of changes shifting players and their positions. Still I am satisfied with the game, Arteshina and Vidmer did a really good today. We lacked some sharpness in offense but could make necessary adjustments in the game course. I am worried about Nolan and Abrosimova's absence and hope that we will still have an opportunity to play with a completely staffed team."
