Turkey came back from a 12-point deficit to beat Italy 69-65 and capture their second U18 European Championship Men bronze medal in three years.
Tayfun Erülkü scored 12 points and Ahmet Tuncer had 10 points while five others hit for at least seven points for Turkey, who took bronze in 2009.
|Francesco Veccia's efforts were not enough for Italy|
One day after being unable to hold a 16-point lead against Serbia and losing the semi-finals, Italy suffered another tragic loss and failed to collect their first medal since 2005 bronze. Francesco Vecchia paced Italy with 14 points while Matteo Imbrò had 13 points, Amedeo Tessitori scored 12 and Mattia Magrini added 10 points in the loss.
Italy jumped ahead 19-8 in the first quarter before watching Turkey get back within 21-19 after 10 minutes.
Trailing 25-23, Italy went on a 17-3 run to take a 40-28 lead, which was 41-32 at halftime.
Turkey fought back to within 45-44 and then led 51-50 after three quarters.
Italy once again put together a run - this time 10-0 to start the fourth quarter and build a 60-51 lead. Imbrò nailed a three-pointer to give Italy a 63-55 cushion with four minutes. But Italy failed to score on five straight possessions and Erülkü's triple completed an 11-0 surge for a 66-63 Turkey lead.
Erbil Eroglu blocked Magrini's layup attempt with 17 seconds left then Berkay Candan grabbed an offensive rebound on a missed free throw and iced the game with two foul shots with 4.2 seconds remaining.
Italy's leading scorer Amedeo Della Valle attempted to play after missing the last two games with a back injury, but could only play two minutes in the second quarter.
