GAME REPORT

Russia Rout Brits To Advance

Viktoria Medvedeva (Russia)
Viktoria Medvedeva had 13 points for Russia in a win that was never in doubt

Russia cruised into the final four of the U20 European Championship Women with a 68-37 rout of Great Britain.

The defending champions were simply too strong for a team that has come further than expected after gaining promotion from Division B.

Russia scored the first 11 points of the game until Deanne Hayward's lay-up with 4 minutes gone broke Britain's duck, but Russia still led 20-8 at the end of the first quarter.

Britain competed better in the second quarter, and when Ella Clark sank a three-pointer with 2:20 to go before half-time, the score was 32-19.

After Clark's jump-shot made it 36-23 early in the third quarter, Russia coach Dmitry Donskov called a time-out and his team responded with a 13-2 run, going up 49-25 on a three-pointer from Viktoria Medvedeva.

Russia always seemed to have another gear, and will take confidence ahead of the semi-finals from a huge win.

Medvedeva and Alexandra Tarasova had 13 points each to lead Russia, while Veronika Dorosheva had 12 and Anastasiya Shilova added 10.

Jessica Hurd and Clark had nine points each to lead Britain.
