Poland Inflict First Defeat On Russia

Magdalena Zietara (Poland)
Magdalena Zietara fired Poland to victory with an inspiring performance and 15 points

Poland ended the unbeaten record of defending champions Russia with a 72-66 win in the qualifying round at the U20 European Championship Women.

Russia had won their first four games but saw this one slip from their grasp during a tense finish in Novi Sad.

Russia had pulled ahead early in the fourth quarter to hold a slight edge in what had been a close battle throughout.

But the scores were level, 60-60 with 3:56 to go, and after Agnieszka Sniezek's jump-shot put Poland on top, Russia trailed for the rest of the game.

Veronika Dorosheva's jump-shot had them within one, 63-62, with 2:38 to go, but Sniezek completed a three-point play from the free-throw line and further free throws from Malgorzata Misiuk made it 68-62 with 57 seconds to go, and Russia could not bridge the gap.
Misiuk and Magdalena Zietara led Poland with 15 points each, with Misiuk also collecting 10 points.

Joanna Markiewicz also scored in double figures with 10 points.

Dorosheva led Russia with 19 points while Alexandra Tarasova added 17 and 10 rebounds and Anastasiya Shilova had 16. But only two points from a rarely-used bench meant their efforts were in vain.
