Ukraine withstood a furious rally to see off Poland 62-57 in their final Group A game in the U20 European Championship Women.
Ukraine were looking comfortable with a 56-45 lead with under five minutes to go, but Poland had other ideas and a jump-shot from Malgorzata Misiuk sparked an 8-2 run that closed the gap to five, 58-53.
As the tension mounted the game became sloppy with both teams committing turnovers, but Poland kept chipping away at the lead, and pulled to within three when Dorota Mistygacz hit a jump-shot with 1:10 to go.
When Alina Iagupova missed for Ukraine, Poland had their chance to perhaps tie it with a three-pointer, but a turnover by Mistygacz gave the ball back to Ukraine and, after a timeout, Olga Maznichenko scored a lay-up to grow the gap to five.
Magdalena Zietara missed with a jump-shot and Ukraine held on to seal the win.
Maznichenko and Iagupova led Ukraine with 16 points each, with Iagupova adding 10 rebounds and seven assists while Maznichenko had nine rebounds.
Olesia Malashenko had 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Mistygacz led Poland with 12 points 11 rebounds.
Both teams finish the group with 2-1 records, and Poland coach Ivona Jablonska was not too disappointed with her team after their overtime win against Serbia the night before.
"We lost this game, but we can look ahead to the next stage," she said. "We were tired after the second game. We still had a chance to win, but couldn't quite do it."
