GAME REPORT

Turkey Beat Romania, Clinch Second Spot

11. Olcay Cakir (Turkey)
Olcay Cakir of Turkey added another great performance to her record in the championship, with 15 points, six rebounds and three steals

Turkey had a strong finish against Romania and prevailed, 54-37, in the last game of the Preliminary Round at the Global Vision U18 European Championship Women.

The win means Turkey clinch the second spot in Group A, behind Sweden, while the hosts have to be satisfied with third and they will start in the Qualifying Round with zero points.

Özge Kavurmacioglu scored her second basket of the game with 4:47 remaining, a huge three-pointer from the corner, to give Turkey a nine-point lead, 44-35.

This ignited a 13-2 run in the last minutes of the game for the Turkish side, who silenced the big local crowd in the "Antonio Alexe Arena " in Oradea.

It was a low scoring game in the first three quarters and neither of the teams were able to connect too much to the basket.

Even though they played during long stretches with both their centers on the court, Alina Craciun and Bianca Blanaru, Romania couldn't protect the paint and Turkey finished with 17 offensive rebounds.

On offense, the hosts weren't able to put the ball inside the paint and the outside shooting didn't help either, as they finished with an astonishigly poor 4.5 percent from the three-point line (1-for-22).

Craciun had 14 points and three rebounds, while Sonia Ursu made her presence felt on defense with 15 rebounds and four steals, but added only seven points to her performance.

Olcay Cakir was again the star player for the Turkish side. She had 15 points to go with six rebounds and three steals.

Kavurmacioglu scored all of her five points in the fourth quarter, but contributed to the victory with eight rebounds, three steals and two assists.

"I am happy that we will take this victory to the Qualifying Round. We were fighting all the way to the end and we won", said Kavurmacioglu after the game.
