Russia delivered a reminder of their title credentials at the U16 European Championship for Women by overcoming Sweden 62-56 on Wednesday.
The victory will see the Russians meet hosts Italy in Friday's quarter-finals while the Swedes, who dropped into second in Group E, will take on Turkey.
And it was an impressive showing from the victors who steadily increased their lead by challenging their opponents' shots while efficiently working the ball inside.
The Russians - led by a team-best 17 points by Ekaterina Tsukanova - held a 31-15 advantage early in the second quarter before a 9-2 Swedish run cut the deficit to 39-32 at half-time.
But eight unanswered points in the third period increased Russia's lead to as much as 56-38 and despite a furious fightback in the last four minutes, Sweden could not quite bridge the gap.
Regan Magarity had 17 points and 11 rebounds for Sweden.
