GAME REPORT

Swedes Win Seesaw Battle With Czechs

Sweden pulled off a 53-50 win over the Czech Republic in a thrilling encounter in Cagliari as the race for quarter-final places at the U16 European Championship for Women heated up.

And it ultimately took a late three-pointer, calmly slotted by point guard Emma Erikkson, to separate the sides after a bruising battle which saw the lead change hands six times before the Swedes held their nerves in the final minute to come out on top.

The Czechs opened up a 16-10 cushion in the first quarter but Sweden hit back to snatch a 28-26 advantage at half-time. With both sides struggling offensively, it became a game of missed chances but even when the Swedes moved six clear in the third period, they could not pull away.

Eventually, with the scores level at 48-48 with 48 seconds left, Eriksson hit the go-ahead score from long range and the Czechs could not find a way back.

"These are the games you want to be in, where it's close all the way," said Swedish coach Henrik Wikstrom, whose side was led by 15 points and 13 rebounds from Gabby Hanson.

"It's a test of character. That's what you want, to see what you're made of. And I think we showed today that we had a lot of heart."

Regan Magarity added 10 points and a game-best 15 rebounds for the Swedes. Sarah Beránková had 13 for the Czechs.
