GAME REPORT

Italy Recover, Beat Hungary

Urged on by their supporters, Italy rebounded in style from their opening day defeat at the U16 European Championships for Women on Friday to cruise to a 62-49 victory over Hungary.

It strengthened the hosts' ambitions to reach Round 2 of the competition and they will have renewed confidence going into Saturday evening's clash with Finland in Cagliari.

And they showed no lingering traumas from their heavy loss to Spain 24 hours earlier, seizing control with a 9-0 start to the game.

1.82m forward Cecilia Zandalasini had 15 of her game-high 19 points before the break as the Italians dominated under the basket, steadily building an advantage which stood at 39-27 at half-time.

The Hungarians turned to Fanni Bodnar to try and reverse their slide but although the young forward compiled 14 points and 10 rebounds, she could not prevent Italy from going as much as 55-35 clear in the third quarter.

And despite some late pressure, they coasted to the win as Hungary lost their unbeaten record.

"That was much better," said Italian coach Renato Nani. "We played well, we executed our pick and rolls, but most of all, we showed a lot of heart. Our offensive distribution was much more even and mentally, we are now focused on the competition."
