Spain unleashed a dominant performance in the opening game of Group C of the U16 European Championships for Women to stun Italy 87-27.
The hosts, coming into the competition with high expectations, instead became the victims of a barrage as the Spaniards produced an almost flawless display to set out their credentials for the title.
Their veteran coach, Evaristo Perez, could barely have asked for more. Italy scored the opening basket. That was as good as it got. 18 points in succession went against them. The turnovers kept coming and they were punished. By half-time Spain led 36-10. And they were not done yet.
Basket after basket kept coming as the Spanish side ruthlessly pulled out of sight. Their advantage increased to 62-23 at the end of the third quarter. And another 7-0 run just darkened the Italian mood.
Perez's players refused to ease off, and they reeled off the game's last ten points with Marina Lizarazu ending with a game-high total of 14.
Italy, who missed all their 13 three-point attempts and were out-rebounded 48-29, will attempt to rebound when they meet Hungary on Friday.
