Poland Start With A Bang

Mateusz Ponitka scored 22 points, Przemyslaw Karnowski had 21 and Piotr Niedzwiedzki collected a double-double as hosts Poland started their Group A play at the U18 European Championship Men with a convincing 89-58 victory over Slovenia.

Karnowski also had eight rebounds and five blocks while Niedzwiedzki had 10 points and 10 rebounds and Michal Michalak added 14 points for Poland, who lived up to their status as title contenders.

Jan Osolnik scored 13 points and Luka Rupnik had 11 points and six assists for Slovenia.



Slovenia struggled offensively but trailed just 11-9 before the hosts began to pull away. The lead was 23-13 after one quarter.

The gap was down to five points before Poland went on an 8-0 run and led 42-33 at halftime.


Slovenia once again fought back, bringing the game to within 51-45. But Karnowski scored eight points as Poland closed the quarter on an 11-0 run for a 62-45 lead.

The Polish onslaught did not stop and the gap was 23 points, 72-49 after back to back three-pointers by Ponitka and Karnowski. The lead swelled to 31 points in the fourth quarter.
