|Jeremiah Massey posted a double-double to brush aside the hopes of Prostejov of advancing to the Quarter-Finals|
BK Prostejov threw a major scare into Lokomotiv Kuban but the Russian side pulled away in the fourth quarter to win the EuroChallenge Last 16 game in Krasnodar and book a place in the Quarter-Finals.
Kestutis Kemzura's team prevailed 90-76 in the Group L game with Mike Wilkinson scoring 25 points and Jeremiah Massey 18.
Massey, a naturalized F.Y.R. of Macedonia international who played at EuroBasket 2009, also corralled 11 rebounds.
Prostejov won the first encounter between the sides 67-66 on February 1, a result that meant they had a chance of reaching the Quarter-Finals if they could upset Lokomotiv on their own court.
Following a three-pointer by David Marek and a jumper by his Prostejov teammate Eugene Lawrence, the Czech team only trailed 68-66 with 8:06 left.
A Sergey Toporov free-throw for Lokomotiv sparked an 18-2 run that left the home side in front to stay.
The hosts ended up out-rebounding Prostejov 37-27 and hitting 53.5% (38 of 71) of their shots from the floor, compared to 44.3% (27 of 61).
Andrius Slezas had 17 points to lead the visitors.
Benas Veikalas, shooting guard BK Prostejov:
"It was a very hard game. Lokomotiv are a good team. We spent much of our physical energy in the game. The last five minutes of the second half we lost 16 points and it was the decisive moment of the game. We spent a lot of energy to come back in the third quarter. We weren't lucky enough. Several times we were very close to our opponent in the score. We evened the score but didn't manage to keep our fighting spirit up to the end of the game."
Peter Balint, head coach BK Prostejov:
"First my congratulations to the coach and the Lokomotiv team. They were stronger tonight. Lokomotiv started very well especially in defense. We made four turnovers. Lokomotiv used a benefit from it and made easy shots. Then we came back into the game and it was good for us. We knew that we are a good team too. Last five minutes of the first half were the key moment of the game. I had to take a time-out but Lokomotiv played very well in any case. Lokomotiv made open three-pointers and gained an advantage of 16 points that was difficult to play back for us."
Donaldas Kairys, assistant coach Lokomotiv Kuban:
"The game started to our benefit. We made several easy baskets. Unfortunately one moment we lost advantage while the opponent put on in the game. We were fighting up to the end in spite of our misfortunes. Our guys did their work well tonight."
Alando Tucker, forward Lokomotiv Kuban:
"It is a very important win for us and we are glad with the result. The game was exciting. We had two ways either to continue the further competition in the EuroChallenge or to stop our performance on the international court this season. The team and me applied all our efforts to gain the win. We have fulfilled our task."
