|Jovo Stanojevic recorded a solid double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds for Karsiyaka who will look to keep their momentum alive in the EuroChallenge|
Pinar Karsiyaka claimed an overtime win on Tuesday night in the opening round action of the EuroChallenge Last 16.
Winners of Regular Season Group G, Karsiyaka kicked off the new phase with an 89-82 triumph at Antwerp Giants.
The Turkish club didn't enter the competition with a lot of hype but they made it safely through the Regular Season and now Hakan Demir's squad has a valuable triumph in Group J away from home.
They prevailed this time without their outstanding 19-year-old center, Furkan Aldemir, who leads the team in rebounding and blocked shots but is currently sidelined by injury.
Leading 45-43 midway through the third quarter, Karsiyaka went on a 16-2 run in a four-minute stretch that appeared to put them in front to stay.
They were still on top 68-59 with 4:55 to go when Antwerp clawed their way back.
Salah Mejri made three of four free-throws and then Darnell Wilson drilled a pair at the stripe.
Trent Strickland followed with two more at the line and a basket to finish the 9-0 run and knot the game at 68-68.
Roel Moors would end up having a chance to put the Giants on top by one with three seconds left but made only one of two free-throws and with that, the game was tied at 77-77 and overtime was needed.
Karsiyaka reeled off the first eight points of the extra period with Osiris Eldridge's three-ball making it 85-77 for the Turkish team.
This time, Karsiyaka held on for the victory.
Karsiyaka's David Holston finished with 24 points and the team also got double-doubles in points and rebounds from Stanojevic and Andre Smith.
Stanojevic had 20 points and 10 boards while Smith added 16 and 10.
In addition to Holston's five-of-12 night from long range, Eldridge drilled three of six shots from behind the arc.
For Antwerp, who were out-rebounded 42-28, Wilson scored 23 points.
Antwerp Head Coach Eddie Casteels:
"Tough, because it's was a great evening with a great comeback from Antwerp Giants. But, we missed in moneytime imported shots against a great Turkish team. A lot of respect for Karsiyaka and it wil be for us a big effort the next weeks to make the next step."
Antwerp Player Darnell Wilson:
"The key of the game? We lost against a big team. Yes we have a change, but in overtime we had some problems with fauls and we missed a little bit energy."
Karsiyaka Assistant Coach Ceyhun Cabadak:
"The first time was a thriller. In the third quarter we made the difference with a zone defence and some big shots. In moneytime we were lucky, but a think this is for us a important victory. We have now three home games and can make a big step to the Final 8."
