Dexia Mons-Hainaut hung on to beat BC Oostende 71-68 and win their first game in EuroChallenge Group H.
Dexia had led 65-59 with 3:30 to go, but saw Caleb Green hit a three-pointer to slice the gap, and when Quentin Serron split a pair of free throws, the lead was 65-63 with 2:22 to go.
Quincy Taylor gave Dexia some breathing room with a lay-up, but Green made it a three-point game again, 67-64, by making one of two from the charity stripe.
Matthew Lojeski then put a scare into Dexia with a lay-up that made it 67-66 with 45 seconds left.
William Thomas fouled Marcus Hatten who made both his shots from the line to give Dexia a 69-66 lead, and Serron missed the chance to cut it as he missed both his free throws.
Benjamin McCauley split a pair to make it 70-66 with 21 seconds left, and although Green's lay-up cut the gap, McCauley gave Dexia all the breathing room they would need with one more free throw.
Ronald Lewis led Dexia with 21 points, while Justin Cage added 18.
Green and Darrel Mitchell had 16 points each for Oostende.
Benjamin Mc Cauley (Player of Dexia):
"It was a very tough game, but once again,we played wrong during fifteen minutes, and made many mistakes. I don't think it's the fact of playing twice a week which explains our situation, but we have found full expedients to win in the last minutes. Now,if we want to reach the next round, we have to beat Orleans next tuesday, and after we'll see, because the three teams which are following Nancy are very close ,and all can happen with the average."
Arik Shivek (Coach of Dexia):
"Once again, we started very bad, and my team was obliged to run after the score, because Oostende quickly lead by nine points! Maybe my guys are tired, I don't know, but when we begin a game very well, we are able to continue in the same way. But when it's the contrary, we met difficulties to come back, and that happened against Nancy, or in the Belgian championship last saturday against Alost. I told my players that Ostende wanted to take it's revenge. First, because we already beat the team in the championship, and also in a tournament just before the championship began. Marcus Hatten was very good in defence face Mitchell, and it wasn't easy for him to give assists to his guys. Now ,or you live ugly,or you die with a beautifoul way...and we are still alive!"
Darrel Mitchell (Player of Ostende):
"We entered the game very good, and lead with 0-7,but after we made many mistakes which allowed our hosts to overcome just before the half time!
In the second half, our task became difficult with our problems of fouls, specially as I was concerned, and also Serron and Pelle. The game was very closed in the last seconds, but now,we've to win against Nancy next week for hoping to reach the next round!"
Jean-Marc Jaumin (Coach of Ostende):
"We have had our chances, but we didn't take advantage of a situation which was favourable to us in the first quarter. At this moment, we had the opportunities to give a knock on Mons' head, but too many turnovers gave our hosts their chances to come in the game.
We knew up and downs during the second half, and as rotations were very difficult to do because of the fouls, some players were obliged to stay more than I expected, like Lojeski who played the whole game. In such conditions, it's not easy to be quiet, and keep calm when the opponent put the pressure on the defence!
More, the team did without Mitchell during almost the fourth quarter, and as he was the leader, that can explain our defeat. Now,I think the second place can be reached, but maybe on details, or average."
