A sparkling performance by Rebekkah Brunson helped Ros Casares to a fine 76-67 road win at Beretta-Famila Schio in the clash of the EuroLeague Women Group D heavyweights as the hosts were punished for some atrocious perimeter shooting and a shocking third quarter.
The forward produced 20 points and 11 rebounds before she fouled out of the game while Marta Fernandez also conjured up a superb return as she also scored 20 points for the Spanish side as well as dishing up five assists.
Just as important a factor in the win for Ros Casares was the icy cold outside shooting of Schio who were an eye watering 1 of 13 from the perimeter and that made an already difficult game even tougher.
Consequently it was the Italians who picked up their first loss although for much of the first half, it looked like they were the more likely to secure the win.
As expected there was little between the teams in the first quarter at 20-20 but the home team began to edge away during the second period with a 9-2 burst.
Liron Cohen maintained their advantage at 39-33 after making a lay-up but Ros Casares then scored five straight points to get within a point.
Schio did manage to keep their noses in front heading into the second half at 43-40 but within two minutes they had lost their lead and would never get it back. In fact it was to prove to be a horrific third quarter for the home team.
They managed a paltry six points and that effectively killed off their hopes of making a big statement by beating last seasons EuroLeague Women runners-up.
As a consequence of their third quarter offensive shortcomings, they trailed 62-49 heading into the last ten minutes and could make no impression as Ros Casares secured the win with relative ease.
Janel McCarville finished with 14 points, 10 rebounds and an impressive 3 blocked shots for Schio.
