Bourges Defence Denies Gorzow

27.10.2010

While Bourges Basket may have endured their worst EuroLeague Women campaign in their history last year, their defence remained as impressive as ever and on the first day of a brand new season it was a familiar story as they locked down Gorzow 57-50.

The French side held the Polish club to a staggering four points in the last period as Gorzow went into meltdown under the trademark defensive pressure of Pierre Vincent and his team.

There had been little between the teams for most of the first half as Bourges took the first quarter 17-13 as they held the visitors scoreless for almost three minutes at the end of the period.

Gorzow then rallied and they had the better of things in the second quarter as they opened up with an 8-2 run to firstly tie the scores and then move ahead with successive baskets by point guard Samantha Richards.

Bourges continued to have something of an offensive drought during the period and only just scraped into double digits which meant when the teams left the court and headed for a break, it was Gorzow who were ahead 32-27.

Both clubs then traded baskets in a less eventful third period before the home team then turned the defensive screw and comprehensively choked the life out of the Gorzow offence which could only manage one basket during the last eight minutes of the game.

Endene Miyem racked up 20 points and harvested 6 rebounds for the winning team while debutante Cathy Joens was in great form with 18 points and some highly efficient scoring inside and out.

Izabela Piekarska and Yelena Leuchanka both missed out on double-doubles for the losing team by one rebound each.
