Halcon Avenida underlined their strength in EuroLeague Women Group C as they secured top spot with a 75-64 victory over second-placed Spartak Moscow Region.
The hosts broke open a tight contest early in the second half, with Erika de Souza scoring five points in a 13-5 run then put them up 50-42.
A three-pointer from Anna Montanana at the end of the period made it 56-45 and an 8-0 run - capped by an alley-oop basket from Montanana - early in the fourth quarter gave them enough breathing space to cruise to the finish.
Alba Torrens led Halcon with 19 points, while Sancho Lyttle had 15, Montanana 14 and De Souza 12, as well as a massive 16 rebounds.
Jelena Milovanovic led Spartak with 17 points while Sue Bird had 13.
Pokey Chatman, head coach Sparta&K:
"We came to this game knowing that we had two things to take care about. First, we needed to limit their transition game under 12 points and second we knew we had to control the boards. We did this in the first half but in the second we couldn't and that was the key for our loss".
Lucas Mondelo, head coach Halcon Avenida:
"This was a win because of our teamwork. We had five players over 10 points and that speaks for itself. Also in defence, the whole team was involved in stopping their key players, Prints and Bird.
Congratulations to our scouting department for the great job on preparing the game plan, thinking about stopping their transition game and defending the pick and roll. We executed the plan from the second quarter on and finally adjusted the Pick & Roll Defense in the third to cruise to victory".
