GAME REPORT

Ekaterinburg Turn On The Style At Rivas

UMMC Ekaterinburg remain unbeaten and at the summit of EuroLeague Women Group B after 20 points from French star Sandrine Gruda helped them cruise to an 76-54 success in Madrid against Rivas Ecopolis who slipped to a third straight loss.

While the home team initially kept pace in the early stages of the game, the superior depth and quality of the Russian club was just too much while a lack of production from both of the Rivas Ecopolis playmakers was again a telling factor in yet another defeat. Elisa Aguilar and Clara Bermejo Moreno could only muster 4 points and 2 assists between them from the point guard spot.

It was certainly a far cry from the slick machine that is UMMC Ekaterinburg these days. From the explosive talent of guard Cappie Pondexter to the serious embarassment of riches in the frontcourt including Gruda, Ann Wauters and Crystal Langhorne, it will clearly take a hugely impressive performance from somebody to stop Ekaterinburg in their tracks.

UMMC Ekaterinburg led 21-14 after the first period and while Rivas fought hard for the remainder of the half, an inside score by Gruda handed her team a double figure lead at 35-25.

While a score by Courtney Paris reduced it to single digits as the teams left the court for a break, it was only brief respite as normal service was resumed when the players re-emerged.

UMMC Ekaterinburg slowly but very convincingly turned the screw and just cranked things up as the home team crumbled with Pondexter making it a twenty point margin at the start of the fourth.

In the end, the visitors strolled to victory to keep their 100 percent record intact.

The lone bright spot for Rivas Ecopolis was once again EuroLeague Women rookie Paris who finished with a creditable 17 points and 8 rebounds.

Langhorne enjoyed a relatively quiet return to her former club with four fouls restricting her court-time a little as she finished with 8 points.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes Rivas Ecópolis vs. UMMC Ekaterinburg

Javier Fort, Rivas Ecópolis coach:
"We played well over the first half of the game, showing great defense, but we played against a great team and we missed some easy shots. They broke us in the second half because they have a lot of quality players and shot very well from the three-point line."

Clara Bermejo, Rivas Ecópolis player:
"We knew it was going to be a complicated game and we did well in the first half. They are a candidate team to win the EuroLeague and they showed why. Still, overall we have a positive outcome of this game because our defense was a lot better that it was in previous games."

Gundars Vetra, UMMC Ekaterinburg coach:
"We know that Spanish teams play well at home, as well as Italians or Turkish clubs, and we were prepared for that. They were very emotional but we showed some great physical shape, we didn´t give up easy baskets and played good defense. Those were the keys."

Chrystal Langhorne, UMMC Ekaterinburg player:
"I think that they played a great game, but we played really well and managed to come out with a victory. Rivas like to push the ball and they are definitely a good team, but they have a lot of new people and need to adjust to that. Right now they are trying to figure out who they are."
