Rivas Ecopolis put up a brave fight against UMMC Ekaterinburg on Wednesday but the Russians won on home soil in EuroLeague Women Group B.
Leading by just one at half-time and trailing 47-46 at the end of the third quarter, Ekat came good in the fourth and posted a 68-60 victory.
Gundars Vetra's team has now won seven of its eight games, with the only defeat coming at home to undefeated Fenerbahce.
Cappie Pondexter led the UMMC offensive attack with 21 points, including a go-ahead three-ball from the arc at the beginning of the fourth quarter.
Rivas, who didn't have injured Amaya Valdemoro, played with great resolve and had a 47-46 lead going into the last quarter following a basket by Courtney Paris.
When play started in the last quarter, Pondexter popped a three and then her teammate Agnieszka Bibrzycka drilled another.
UMMC had the lead for good.
A DeWanna Bonner jumper and two Anna Cruz free-throws reduced the Rivas deficit to 52-51, but Maria Stepanova answered with a jump shot for UMMC and Bibrzycka buried another from behind the arc to put the hosts in front, 57-51.
Bonner, who finished with 15 points, tried to keep Rivas close.
Her two free-throws made it a four-point game.
Stepanova replied with a three-point play and added another basket for a 62-53 advantage.
Rivas got no closer than six the rest of the way and fell to 3-5.
Head coach of Rivas Ecopolis Javier Fort:
"Congratulations to Ekaterinburg. We played well during the first three quarters. But in the last ten minutes the UMMC players were accurate in three-pointers, and went ahead. Amaya Valdemoro didn't play tonight, because she picked up an injury against Sopron."
Head coach of UMMC Gundars Vetra:
"Our opponents have prepared for the game very well, the strategy chosen by them bore fruits. They tried to be effective in defense, and often changed their defensive schemes. They played well even without Amaya Valdemoro. In the fourth quarter we strengthened our defense and started shooting well from behind the arc; our big girls were productive in the paint as well. I want to congratulate my team, I am satisfied with their performance in the last quarter."
UMMC captain Maria Stepanova:
"The game was not easy, the opponent resisted well, and only our three-pointers gave us an advantage in the last quarter."
