GAME REPORTCras Basket Taranto produced a blistering final quarter as they routed TTT Riga 72-49 on the road with a trio of sparkling double-double performances paving the way for the Italian club to remain unbeaten in Group A. Brooke Smith, Megan Mahoney and Elodie Godin all put up big numbers as the visitors powered their way to another success to build on their opening round home win against Good Angels Kosice. In a tight first quarter and with both teams struggling to find any kind of offensive rhythm, the visitors edged their way in front 12-9. Both teams then managed to move through the gears offensively during the second quarter. With two minutes to go until the interval, Kristine Karklina tied the scores up at 26-26 but the home team then allowed Cras Basket Taranto to outscore them 12-6 during the remaining exchanges to lead 38-32. As the teams took to the floor for the second half, the free-flowing offence of the second quarter disappeared and it was back to defences dominating during the third as both teams locked each other down. At the midway point of the penultimate period, Cras Basket Taranto led 42-38 but Shavonte Zellous rattled off six points in a row to switch the momentum the way of the home team. However for home fans dreaming of a first win of the new season, it proved to be more of a nightmare as Cras Basket Taranto firstly sneaked back in front 46-44 heading into the last ten minutes and then ran riot as the hosts imploded. TTT Riga went into complete meltdown during the last quarter as their offence went AWOL and the visitors took full advantage as they conjured up a stunning 25-4 period to blow the Latvian club away and cruise to a comfortable victory. Brooke Smith finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds, Elodie Godin had 11 points and 10 boards while Megan Mahoney had 15 and 11. Shavonte Zellous led the losing team with a game high 18 points. |
