Pécs 2010 stayed firmly into the hunt for a place in the EuroLeague Women post-season with a 75-72 upset of Good Angels Kosice in Hungary.
Zeljko Djokic's battling Pécs improved to 4-5 with the victory and moved into fourth place in Group A, with USO Mondeville (3-5) due to play later Thursday evening against Cras Basket Taranto.
Pécs were awesome.
They got a terrific game from a host of players, including their captain and veteran, Dalma Ivanyi.
The point guard scored a season-high 18 points, handed out six assists and also hauled in eight rebounds.
It was Kelsey Griffin who put the hosts in front to stay with a three-pointer midway through the third quarter for a 47-46 advantage.
Point guard Zsófia Fegyverneky followed with a basket and though Kosice's Candice Dupree scored to bring the deficit back to 49-48 with 2:37 to go in the third, the visitors got no closer.
Alexandria Quigley answered with a three-pointer and then after Kosice pulled to within 52-50, Ivanyi struck from the arc.
Pécs went in front by 10 in the fourth quarter before winning by three.
The Hungarian side excelled at the free-throw line, making 22 of 23 on the night.
They also shot the ball well from long range, drilling seven of 15.
Kosice were four of 10 from three-point land and sank eight of 11 free-throws.
Dupree had 18 points in a losing effort.
Good Angels dropped to 5-4.
Good Angels Kosice Head Coach Stefan Vitek:
"Congratulation to Pecs. We would like to turn the game in the last minutes but it was impossible. The most important moment was lost at Nora Bujdoso's rebound. 18 turnovers are too many. It was a really good game."
Good Angels Kosice player Candice Dupree:
"Pecs was a really hard opponent. At the beginning we were better but at the end they were full of power. I am very sad because of this game."
Pécs 2010 Head Coach: Zeljko Dokic:
"It was a really good historical game. We are waiting for the result of tonight's game of Crass Basket Toronto vs. USO Mondeville. Hope dies last"
Pécs 2010 player Dalma Ivanyi
"I am very happy. Both teams played a very good game. At the end we had more energy, and virility. We felt a very big burden in our heart to win this game and battled to the end."
