A team effort saw Cras Basket Taranto overcome Good Angels Kosice 74-59 in their EuroLeague Women Group A opener.
While Kosice relied almost completely on Zuzana Zirkova's 27 points, Taranto used a more balanced effort, led by 17 points from Kathy Wambe.
Megan Mahoney added 11 while Michelle Greco also scored in double figures with 10.
Elodie Godin came up big on the boards with 10 rebounds, although it was Kosice's Candice Dupree who finished top of the rebounding charts with 12.
Kosice outrebounded their hosts and also enjoyed a turnover advantage, but poor shooting from Dupree, who went just 3-of-11 (27.2%) from the field and Hickova (1-of-6) meant they could not capitalise.
Zirkova did her best, making 5-of-10 (50%) from the paint and exactly the same from three-point range, but could not carry the load alone.
Head Coach Cras Taranto, Roberto Ricchini:
"I am happy for this successful debut in the EuroLeague. The victory is the result of the hard work of the team, that I think that will improve a lot in the near future".
Cras Taranto guard Kathy Wambe:
"Winning the first game in the EuroLeague Women is very good. We played great defense and an intelligent offensive. This victory gives us high moral and pushes us to work with new motivations"
Head Coach Good Angels, Stefan Svitek:
"My team is committed a lot, but we played versus a motivated team. On the next match we will try our redemption."
Good Angels forward Candice Dupree:
"Sorry to have lost this match. But it was not easy to win, as Taranto is a strong opponent. However, we are at the beginning and the team is expected to grow. I'm sure that victory will come soon."
