GAME REPORT

Serbia Hand Israel Defeat In Thriller

11. Ivanka Matic (Serbia), 15. Jennifer Fleischer (Israel)
Ivanka Matic provided eight points and six rebounds in the narrow win

A near 5,000 fans in Ruma were left wiping their foreheads in sheer relief after Serbia survived a buzzer beating triple attempt by Israel as they moved neck and neck with their rivals in the fight for top spot in Group B of EuroBasket Women Qualifying Round.

Serbia clinched a super 70-68 success to avenge their opening day horror show in Israel when they were pummelled although things would have looked a whole lot different had Liad Suez Karni successfully delivered a last second killer blow.

However Serbia now move to the same 3-1 record as Israel with both looking in a strong position to push on and book their places in Poland next summer.

It was a fantastic game for the packed crowd to enjoy with both teams really well matched all over the court and neither budging in a real war of attrition.

It was level at 17-17 after the first quarter and still tied up at 39-39 as the teams headed for the locker room, highlighting just how brilliantly each team stood toe to toe exchanging blows.

Approaching the midway point of the third quarter , it briefly looked like Serbia might pull away at 45-39 but six straight points for the visitors squared things up once again.

With 9 seconds to go until the end of the penultimate period, it took a big three-pointer by Liron Cohen to separate the teams as Israel took a slender 53-51 lead into the last ten minutes.

Once again Serbia got on a roll and one that looked like it might be pivotal when they started with a 10-1 run to go seven points ahead but in keeping with the game, Israel didn't give up and forced a dramatic climax.

Still down by seven with just over a minute to play, a triple by Laine Selwyn and a jump-shot by Shay Doron gave Israel a glimmer.

When Jelena Maksimovic then travelled with 13 seconds left, Israel suddenly had their fate back in their own hands but it wasn't to be.

Adrijana Knezevic was the pick for the hosts with 15 points and excellent 7 of 8 shooting to go with 5 rebounds.

Liron Cohen sunk five triples in her 19 point haul for the losing team.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes Serbia vs. Israel

Israel Head Coach Eli Rabi:
"Serbia was well prepared for this game. Our rival played aggressive all the time. We had a chance in the last attack, but we made a bad decision. But it is part of the game. We have to turn to the next game, against Latvia."

Serbian Head Coach Miodrag Vesković:
"I am extremely happy after this win. I knew it would be difficult match, and that happened because we played against a team who were undefeated so far and the favorite of our group. Thanks to the great fans we managed to find a rhythm and win."
