GAME REPORT

Israel Scrape Important Road Win In Riga

Israel took a huge early stride in their pursuit of coming out on top in Group C of EuroBasket Women Qualifying Round after showcasing their quality with a terrific 71-66 success against Latvia in Riga.

Both teams headed into this second game of their respective campaigns having already got off the mark and Coach Eli Rabi was right to have warned his team to expect a tough match-up against the hosts.

Israel had to fight hard to pick up this excellent win on the road although they almost blew it after giving away a ten point advantage in the final quarter.

Trailing 59-49 with nine minutes remaining, Latvia launched a real comeback and it looked as if the momentum had swung the way of the home team down the stretch when with just over a minute to go, Gunta Basko completed a rare four point play.

Having drilled a triple and also sunk the free-throw from the resulting foul, that tied the game up at 66-66 and Israel suddenly found themselves on the ropes and in danger of crumbling at just the wrong moment.

However, they kept their composure and stepped up defensively to ensure the scoring efforts of Basko would prove to be the last for Latvia while also icing four of five free-throws to finally seal their win.

Shay Doron poured in 22 points for the winning team while Liron Cohen played an important supporting role with 11 points and 5 assists.

Basko was the leading light for Latvia with 19 points including four triples although it was turnovers that proved costly - the usually reliable Kristine Karklina throwing the ball away eight times alone for the hosts.
