GAME REPORT

Belgium Pip Bulgaria To Go Top

Belgium have claimed top spot in Group C of the EuroBasket 2011 Qualifying Round after beating Bulgaria 74-69 in the battle of unbeaten teams.

The hosts had to hold off a Bulgarian rally down the stretch but came through comfortably to improve to 3-0.

An 11-3 run that began late in the third quarter and continued well into the fourth kept alive Bulgaria's interest in the game.

But Belgium responded with a Sam van Rossom lay-up and a Axel Hervelle jump-shot to move back into a double-digit lead 71-61.

They were still ahead by 10, 73-63, as the game moved into the last two minutes, but Bulgaria were not ready to throw in the towel as Deyan Ivanov made a pair of free throws, Stefan Georgiev added a jump-shot and Filip Videnov scored on a fast-break to make it 73-69 with 50 seconds left.

But they got no closer as Videnov missed the chance to add another from the free-throw line before being off target with a jump-shot.

Hervelle added insurance from the charity stripe for Belgium.

Christophe Beghin led the victors with 15 points, while Van Rossom and Marcus Faison had 13 each and Hervelle and Beye Tabu-Eboma scored 10 apiece.  Videnov finished with 18 points while Kaloyan Ivanov added 17.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes Belgium vs. Bulgaria

Belgium Head Coach Eddy Casteels:
"This is a stunning victory after a superb first half. Yes, in the closing stages it was still exciting. We knew that, because Bulgaria did this in the previous two games in money time. A three on three is a fact, but the road is still long. "

Bulgaria Head Coach Rosen Barchovski:
"We could not confirm a good start and the Belgians did in the first half hurt us. In the final stage we made a comeback. This provides a perspective for the return match. "

Belgium Center Tomas Van Den Spiegel:
"That after one month and after a wrist injury I could make my comeback is incredible. In those few minutes I tried to make merit for the team. The third victory in a row we can not dream. I estimate our chances are still 50/50."
