GAME REPORT

Georgia Dominate Portugal, Stay In Touch

Georgia kept alive their hopes of qualifying for EuroBasket 2011 at the expense of winless Portugal with a 73-57 victory on Wednesday night.

They had to recover from an early deficit to do it, however, as Portugal put up a fight before their own slim qualification hopes were extinguished.

Heshimu Evans scored nine points for Portugal in the opening period, his lay-up with 2:48 to go in the period putting them on top 16-7.

But Georgia scored the next 11 points to move back in front and Zaza Pachulia's lay-up then sparked another run that had them six points clear, up 31-25, by half-time.

They then scored the first 10 points of the second half to take complete control, and there was no way back for Portugal.

Pachulia led Georgia with 17 points, while Viktor Sanikdze scored 12 points and had 10 rebounds.
Taurean Green also reached double figures with 12 points.

Miguel Miranda led Portugal with 16 points, while Evans had 13 and 11 rebounds. Carlos Andrade finished with 14 points in the losing cause.

Georgia move to 2-1, while Portugal are winless after four games.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes Georgia vs. Portugal

Igor Kokoskov, Georgia coach:
"We knew that it would be a very tough game against Portugal. We had to fight for the full 40 minutes; match, we lost the first period, but then we improved our defense and our offense was also quite good today, especially in the last 10 minutes. Now we have two home wins and two very important matches coming up, in Bulgaria and Poland and we will try our best to achieve positive results."

Moncho Lopes, Portugal coach:
"I would like to say many thanks to the Georgian basketball federation for organizing such a high level match in Tbilisi. We didn't play bad, I think that the defensive play of Portugal was rather good, but Georgia had a huge advantage inside and in rebounding. We have now lost four games in Division A but I can say that we improve our play step by step and will try to gather more points in the rest of the games."
