GAME REPORT

Lishchuk Leads Ukraine Past Hungary

Ukraine got off the mark in their EuroBasket qualifying campaign with a win over Hungary on Wednesday night.

Having lost their first two games, Ukraine steadied the ship as Serhiy Lishchuk poured in 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in a dominating performance.

Lishchuk proved the difference in a tight game that was a one-point contest early in the fourth quarter.
That was when Adam Hanga's jump-shot closed the gap to 64-63.

But Ukraine pulled clear from there and Rostyslav Kryvych's three-pointer with 4:13 to go gave them a 73-66 advantage.

Hungary came back once more with a Hanga dunk followed by Peter Lorant's jump-shot that made it 75-71, but they could not score again as Denys Lukashov and then Lishchuk iced the game from the free-throw line.

Oleksiy Pecherov added 15 points for Ukraine and Dmytro Gliebov chipped in with 14 points.

Hanga had 22 points in vain for Hungary, while David Vojvoda and Lorant both collected 12 and Akos Horvath finished with 10.

Ukraine improve to 1-2 and Hungary drop to 1-3.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes Ukraine vs. Hungary

Hungary player Adam Hanga:
"We played a tough game, we tried to slow Ukraine down; it worked in the first half, but it did not in the second and that's why we lost.

Hungary coach Lajos Mészáros:
"I have to congratulate Ukraine. They showed that at the moment they are a little bit better than us. I am also happy to see my young team show so much promise for the future. In the first half we scored everal shots from the outside, in the second half we stopped doing that and failed to stop Ukraine's big men on offense and that cost us the game."

Ukraine forward Maxym Pustozvoniv:
"This was a very important game for us, first of all mentally. We got ourselves into a pretty tough spot after two losses at the start of the Qualifying Round. The support of the Lviv fans really helped us tonight."

Ukraine coach Vitaliy Cherniy:
"It's better to pursue a bad win than a good loss and our position after two games forced us to do just that. Tonight my players showed that they can play. The support of the fans felt great."
