It proved to be third time lucky for Hungary as they finally opened their account in Group B with a 74-70 win against Bosnia & Herzegovina in Szolnok courtesy of a powerful first-half performance.
Having endured a tough start to their campaign with losses against group favourites Great Britain and F.Y.R. of Macedonia, Hungary are off and running although almost blew it after a nervous finish.
The home side accumulated a 15 point lead at the midway point of the game and looked comfortable but Bosnia & Herzegovina came roaring back in the closing stages.
With just under five minutes remaining, a three-pointer by Akos Horvath put Hungary 69-59 in front but an 8-1 run by the visitors capped off with a triple by Kenan Bajramovic made it a one shot game with less than two minutes left.
That set up a tense and nervous finale and when 73-67 in front Hungary looked to have done it but another triple by Bosnia & Herzegovina, this time from Nemanja Gordic meant it was still a one shot game with 25 seconds remaining.
However unlike in their previous game against Great Britain, the hosts kept their composure to eek out the win - David Vojvoda making the telling foul shot.
Adam Hanga starred for Hungary with 18 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists.
Things might have been different for Bosnia & Herzegovina had their usually reliable star man Henry Domercant not had an off day. He was a paltry 2 of 11 from the field and that was crucial in a tight game.
Hungary Player Akos Horváth:
I feel the Bosnians thought about us a little lightly. Our game today was much better than what we showed in the first game. After 4-5 passes we always found a free man. We started with good defense, and we got advantage soon. The team had observed, and this is reflected in the exciting end of the game. I'm glad to win.
Bosnia And Hercegovina Forward Kenan Bajmarovic:
The main reason for loss, we did not work like a team. We were unable to take advantage of easy shots, and when we had a chance then we missed. I feel bad, because we needed to win, so now we travel to Ukraine and Britain needing to win. But there we can win if we work in a team -said Kenan Bajramovic
Hungary Head Coach Lajos Meszaros:
We produced a great first half, but as expected the Bosnians comes up after the break the Bosnians. That happened through the advantage of experienced players to control our mistakes, but our heart, the mental attitude and the audience helped to us , and a we did huge victory.
Bosnia And Hercegovina Head Coach Sabita Hadzic:
Our first half was terrible, poorly defended and attacked. After, we tried everything, but in vain, during catch up, we ran out of strength, it was not enough in the end of the game.
