FYR of Macedonia got off to an excellent start in their EuroBasket qualifying campaign with a 71-58 away win over Ukraine.
Pero Antic scored 26 points as FYR of Macedonia finished the game on a 16-3 run to win it.
Serhiy Lishchuk's three-pointer for Ukraine tied the scores at 55-55.
But Damjan Stojanovski responded with a three-pointer and the score was 61-55 when Darko Sokolov nailed another with 3:14 to go.
Sergii Gladyr split a pair of free throws to maintain Ukraine's interest, but the game was getting away from them as Todor Gechevski added two more insurance points from the charity stripe.
Antic then hit two more with 42 second left to extend the lead to nine.
Lishchuk cut the gap to seven with a jump-shot, but those were Ukraine's final points on the night as Gechevski and Markes Grin wrapped things up from the free-throw line.
Gechevski finished with 16 points while Vojdan Stojanovski had 11 before fouling out.
Denys Lukashov led Ukraine with 12 points, while Lishchuk collected 11 and Dmytro Gliebov got 10.
I think both teams played under pressure the first half, and in the second half our desire and experience helped us be in front at the end. Antic was unstoppable, the home team did not have solution for him. We did a good job of stopping Ukraine's best players and in the end we deserved to win.
Pero Antic, FYR of Macedonia
First game is always difficult for any team especially when you play away and especially for a team like our team - a young team, to go on the road and win the first game. I also congratulate the Ukraine team for the great game and for the great atmosphere and I hope we continue to win in the second game and keep doing that all the way.
Viacheslav Kravtsov, Ukraine
We felt the pressure from the start of the game and couldn't demonstrate the type of game we had during warm up tournaments. Our shooters would pass on the open threes, we didn't feed the ball down low and that cost us. Their big men shoot well and it's not typical for us to play against such offence.
Vitaliy Cherniy, Ukraine head coach
I told my players before the game that the team that wants to win more is going to end up winning. We moved the ball well at the start of the game and were ahead, but all of a sudden started to play individually and lost the momentum. We knew Antic was a good shooter and we had a task of having a hand in his face no matter how far away from the basket he was. We demonstrated a lack of discipline by not doing just that. I take the responsibility for this loss. We have long ways to go and will try to leave this game behind and prepare for the upcoming ones.
