Hobbled France Pull Together For Semi-Final Berth
Laurie Datchy scored nine of her game-high 22 points in a decisive 12-3 fourth quarter run to give France a 69-61 victory over Lithuania and a semi-final date with Russia at the U20 European Championship for Women.
Playing without injured leading scorer and rebounder Diandra Tchatchouang, Medelome Medenou added 13 points and Hhadydia Minte had five points, 11 rebounds and an inside basket to give France a 67-61 lead with 54 seconds to play.
The French will be out for revenge after losing to Russia in the final qualifying group match.
Lithuania wasted a 14-point, 13-rebound showing by Giedre Paugaite while Marina Solopova had 17 points, five rebounds and five assists and Gabriele Gutkauskaite added 14 points.
Lithuania were the first team to pull away with an eight-point gap in the first quarter, which ended with the Lithuanians ahead 21-15.
There were eight lead changes in the second quarter before Lithuania scored the final seven points for a 36-30 lead at the break.
France scored the first 10 points of the third quarter but Lithuania answered with a 10-2 run of their own and were ahead 48-46 after three periods.
And Datchy took over the fourth quarter, scoring 13 points, including nine in a 12-3 surge for a 62-54 advantage. Gutkauskaite hit five straight points but Lithuania converted only one basket in their last five possessions.
