Klintsone Steps Up, Latvia Win
Anete Klintsone scored eight of her game-high 19 points in a decisive fourth quarter run to lead Latvia to a 70-67 victory over previously undefeated France at the U20 European Championship for Women.
Kristine Vitola added 13 points and 11 rebounds as Latvia improved to 3-1 in the qualifying round Group E.
France dropped their first game of the tournament to fall to 3-1 in the group. Pauline Thizy led the French with 16 points while Diandra Tchatchouang added 14 points and Laurie Datchy had 13 points.
The game went back and forth early before France built a seven-point lead. Latvia knotted the game at 17-17 on Klintsone's buzzer beating three-pointer.
Latvia fell behind by five in the second quarter but answered with a 10-2 run to take the lead. And the hosts were up 32-20 at the break.
France trailed in the third until a 12-3 spurt meant a seven-point lead. But the gap was just 48-46 for France when Klintsone again beat the buzzer with a trey.
The Latvian lead was 57-55 when Klintsone nailed a long ball, two foul shots and another triple in an 11-4 run for a 68-59 lead with two minutes to play. The French cut the margin to 70-65 on Tchatchouang's put-back basket. But Jessie De Colo turned the ball over with 30 seconds left in France's final chance.
