In the second game of group D the Czech Republic were able to land their first victory. The Czechs beat Belarus 60-50 and made a first big step towards the next round.
Belarussian Hanna Kalenta scored 24 points but it wasn't enough to keep the Czechs from getting the win.
Nada Salacova marked 7 points and corralled 14 boards for the winning team. The Czechs had a perfect start into the tournament with a 23-8 lead after the opening period. Belarus improved in the second quarter, allowing only six points and managed to close the gap to six points as well.
The Czechs fought back and did not let the Belarussians take over the game however. After thirty minutes they led by the margin of 10 points again (43-33).
A three pointer by Alena Holubeva brought Belarus back in striking distance, but they couldn't keep the Czechs from running up the score up to 58-47.
With only 1:31 minutes left, the game was essentially over. The Czech Republic claimed victory right from the tip-off and collected a crucial first win. In the upcoming matches they surely hope to keep the momentum in their favour.
