Early Knockout As Spartak
Beat Galatasaray In
SuperCup Women

Spartak Moscow Region hammered Galatasaray 92-59 in the inaugural SuperCup Women on Tuesday in Vidnoje.

Without their trio of superstars Diana Taurasi, Sue Bird and Lauren Jackson, three-time defending EuroLeague Women champions Spartak still had far too many weapons for a Galatasaray outfit that played in this game after winning last season's EuroCup Women.

New Spartak Moscow Region signing Ilona Korstin, who had 14 points, four rebounds and three steals, was voted MVP of the event.

The game was effectively over by half-time.

Janel McCarville, Korstin's former teammate at the now defunct CSKA Moscow, had 11 first-half points and big summer signing Anete Jekabsone-Zogota contributed nine of her 16 before the break as the three-time EuroLeague Women champions built a 48-23 lead.

The Russian giants cruised the rest of the way.

Taurasi, the MVP of the EuroLeague Women Final Four earlier this year who only just captured WNBA MVP honors and led the Phoenix Mercury to their second league crown in three years, did attend Tuesday's game.

Play was stopped midway through the fourth quarter and Taurasi was recognized at midcourt before going giving hugs to various Spartak employees and teammates.

Spartak are aiming for an unprecedented fourth EuroLeague Women crown this season while Galatasaray will also be taking part in the competition.

The EuroLeague Women tips off on October 28, with Spartak hosting Frisco Sika Brno in Group D and Galatasaray at home for a Group A game against Cras Basket Taranto - the team they beat in last year's EuroCup Women Final.

Quotes Spartak Moscow
Region vs. Galatasaray

Galatasaray coach Zafer Kalaycioglu:
"It was difficult for us from the onset. The level of Spartak (players) made all the difference; they went so far ahead that we were unable to catch up with them no matter how hard we tried. We had before suggested Istanbul as a possible venue for this game, but after hearing the ideas Spartak had about this game we realized we had to let it be played here in Vidnoje. And we do not regret our decision. We would like to thank them for the spectacular show and for the warm hospitality."

Spartak Moscow Region Vidnoje coach, Laszlo Ratgeber:
"We began our preparations for this game with a friendly game in Istanbul. After that game we made progress with each step we took. We began this season wonderfully and I hope we will be able to keep up the pace during the whole season and of course finish it with a victory. I would like to thank all the organizers and the government of Moscow Region for the show that everybody enjoyed so much this evening."
