Montenegro are still alive and kicking at the U20 European Championship Men 2010 after they signed off the Qualification Round with a 70-57 win against Latvia but now face an anxious wait to see if result go in their favour and hand them a quarter-final place in Zadar.
Having looked like their chances of a quarter-final spot might have gone yesterday afternoon after a gut-wrenching overtime loss to Greece, results went their way last night and they certainly capitalised on their unexpected second chance with this impressive victory.
Both teams headed into the game with an outside shot of making the last eight with Latvia having plenty of confidence from their win in the previous game against Lithuania.
However a strong finish to the second quarter really set the tone for the remainder of the game for Montenegro who rattled off the last seven points of the half to take a 37-29 lead heading into the locker rooms.
While Latvia rallied in the early stages of the third quarter, back-to-back triples by Nemanja Radovic and Petar Stojanovic took their team out to a ten point advantage at 50-40 and they never looked back.
Latvia meanwhile will be cursing their defensive rebounding performance which was poor. They gave up far too many offensive boards to Montenegro and Bojan Dubljevic in particular who pulled down seven for his team to go with his 16 points.
Valdimir Mihailovic top scored for his team with 18 points while Latvian center Lauris Blaus followed up his big performance against Lithuania with fourteen points (watch the Montenegro postgame reaction here).
