GAME REPORT

France Scrape Win Against Never-Say-Die Italy

France dodged a major bullet against Italy after throwing away a sixteen point advantage but still managing to scrape a 61-58 success to move on to two wins and preserve their unbeaten status in Group C of the U20 European Championship Men in Makarska, Croatia.

The result was perhaps rough justice on a plucky Italian team who having lost their opening game of the tournament showed a lot of heart to haul back from a 41-25 deficit in this contest to manoeuvre themselves into a potentially game winning situation.

However after their star man Alessandro Gentile had handed them the lead with three minutes to go by firing a big triple from the wing, Italy struggled to execute down the stretch and couldn't find the composure neccessary to complete what would have been a fine comeback win.

Much of that was due to the excellent defensive work of French guard Andrew Albicy who forced the vital turnover in the final minute to hand his team the initiative in the dying stages and take his tally in the game to an impressive five steals.

Italy did have their chances, but two missed free-throws from center Paul Biligha in the final minute were to prove costly as France held their nerve to seal an unconvincing win.

Gentile was the top scorer in the game with 22 points while both Paul Lacombe and Christophe Leonard recorded 16 points each for France.
