GAME REPORT

Poland Hammer Latvia

12. Daniel Szymkiewicz (Poland)
Daniel Szymkiewicz was not on target from downtown with 1/7 but made up for it with great accurancy from the charity stripe where he went 15/15

Smiling faces on the Polish bench after taking their debut win in the U16 European Championship behind a 72-45 victory over Latvia at Sports Hall Topolica in Bar, Montenegro on Friday afternoon.

Poland take a 1-1 balance in Group C while Latvia is down to 0-2 with yet another big defeat after the 33 point loss to Spain yesterday.

Tomorrow Latvia and Bulgaria will meet in the first game of the group, while Poland will take on Spain in the closing game of the group.

It was a great bounce for Poland who dropped the first game by 26 points, but now made the effort to earn an extra point for a possible tie that will require goal difference tiebreaker.

The first quarter already exampled the Polish domination and their best player so far in the competition Daniel Szymkiewicz.

The young guard scored 28 points added no less than 12 rebounds and four assists while Rafal Stefanik had 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Ceslavs Mateikovics scored 18 for Latvia and Oskars Reinfelds added seven points, 10 rebounds and three blocks.

"Yesterday we arrived to the game over confident since we beat Bulgaria easily in the preparation period, while today we had a different approach," explained the winning coach Janusz Kociolek.

"My players listened to my instructions today and brought to the floor the things we worked on. I told my players before the game that the winner of the game will be the team who's more prepared mentally.

"We wanted to win by a bigger margin than our loss yesterday to be safe and now we're ready for tomorrow's challenge.

"I hope we'll play well again and this time a one point win will be enough for us."

Latvia was in the game for the first minutes, but then came a 14-0 run behind good minutes by Stefanik at the end of the first 10 minutes the scoreboard displayed a 26-10 margin.

Szymkiewicz took over the game after the break, and his drives created good shots for himself and also his teammates.

Yet another lay-up pushed the gap up to 21, 49-28 with 17 minutes still on the clock.

It was still enough time for Latvia to make a change, but the Polish side was the one in charge, and the gap kept growing.

Another 6-0 run put Poland where they wanted with a 29 point lead, before Latvia cut a bit on the margin.

Szymkiewicz made sure his coach will get his wish and with a three point play before the buzzer created the 27 point difference that could make the difference tomorrow.
