Valencia Need OT Against
Dexia But Advance To
Eurocup

Valencia Basket Club laid to rest their nightmare night in Belgium last week with a 79-61 home victory over Dexia Mons-Hainaut to reach the Eurocup.

Needing to win the second leg of the Qualifying Round tie by 16 points after crashing to a 78-63 defeat in the opener, Valencia led 73-58 at the end of regulation.

That forced the two sides to go to overtime.

After two Nando De Colo free-throws gave Valencia a 75-59 advantage, Dexia's Ben Ebong scored to reduce the deficit to 14 with 59 seconds left.

Craig Callahan fouled Matt Nielsen when the Australia international was attempting a three-pointer but he made just one of the three to take the lead to 76-61 with 44 seconds to go.

Ebong, however, turned the ball over with 31 seconds to play and Valencia coach Neven Spahija called a timeout.

Dexia fouled Kosta Perovic with nine seconds remaining and the Serbia international sank both attempts for a 78-61 lead.

Needing a three-pointer to force a second overtime, Nate Reinking was called for travelling with three seconds to play for Dexia.

With two seconds to play, Dexia fouled Nielsen and he made just one of two free-throws to leave the door slightly ajar for the visitors.

But Kelvin Torbert's attempt to send the game to overtime failed when he missed from three-point range.

Rafael Martinez led the Valencia scoring with 18 points with Nando De Colo contributing 15.

Perovic also had 12 points and six rebounds while captain Victor Claver, who played well late in regulation, had eight points, eight boards and two blocked shots.

Dominique Coleman scored 12 points for Dexia, who will play in the EuroChallenge.

Quotes Valencia BC SAD vs.
Dexia Mons-Hainaut

Neven Spahija (Valencia BC coach):

"What can I say after 45 minutes of a very tough game? It was very difficult to start 15 points down and we were quite nervous at the beginning, with easy mistakes. We couldn't wait for a brilliant basket, but I want to thank all the fans because they were very important for the victory"

Arik Shivek (Dexia Mons coach):

"We played two good games against a very powerful team, as Valencia, and I hope this will be a starting point for something good, in our competition as well as in the EuroChallenge. They played very good defense, that was the clue, and we couldn't stop their important players"

VĂctor Claver (Valencia BC player):

"The fans were fantastic, giving us a loto f energy. We started pretty nervous, but I think we deserved to get into Eurocup"
