GAME REPORT

Artland Dragons Knock Wels Out Of EuroChallenge

Artland Dragons ended the EuroChallenge dreams of WBC Raiffeisen Wels with a 79-68 win in Germany.

Winners of three straight in the competition before the contest, WBC needed one more victory to finish second in Group G but were instead pipped to the runners-up spot by Antwerp, who defeated Tartu Rock in Estonia earlier on Tuesday night.

Wels and Antwerp finished 3-3 but the Belgians enjoyed a +4 goal differential in their two meetings and thus advanced to the Last 16 ahead of the Austrians.

Leading 61-57 with 6:12 remaining, Artland got a three-pointer from Nathan Peavy.

After Davor Lamesic replied with a lay-up for WBC, Darren Fenn scored four points in a 6-0 run that gave the German club a 70-59 lead.

The Dragons went in front by 16 points before easing to a 79-68 triumph.

Artland, who finished first in Group G with a 5-1 record, dominated the boards.

They out-rebounded WBC 45-21.

Charles Lee had 12 rebounds to go with his four points and Peavy pulled down nine boards.

Ronald Ross scored 17 and Folarin Campbell 15 in the win.

For WBC, Trenton Meacham poured in 19 points.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes Artland Dragons vs. WBC Raiffeisen Wels

Thorsten Leibenath, Artland Dragons head coach:
"This was an important win for us, first of all because we had to show a good performance to our fans, second we wanted to end this stage with a win. We had great respect of our opponent. Wels is well coached and plays good team basketball. I wasn't satisfied with the first half. We played okay offensively but our defense wasn't good. I have to congratulate my team to the defensive performance in the second half. And when we played faster offensively we took advantage of the game."

Nathan Peavy, Artland Dragons, forward:
"Over all it was a good game for us. At the beginning we had some trouble defensively, but were able to overcome and picked up our defensive intensity. In the second half we also picked up our offense. I am happy that we won, it doesn't matter who we play now. I just want to win."

Raoul Korner, WBC Raiffeisen Wels head coach:
"We had a good start into the game and controlled the pace offensively and through transition defense. We started to struggle after Quakenbrück played more aggressive defensively and we had problems to defend the pick and roll and caught easy points. But the main thing were the rebounds, where we were inferior to Quakenbrück. We limited our turnover that kept us in the game. We managed to keep up, when Quakenbrück played well, but we couldn't take control when they had a bad phase."

Tilo Klette, WBC Raiffeisen Wels center:
"We managed to keep up in the first half, but coulnd't keep up anymore when Qukenbrück improved. We were too weak to get the rebounds in the second half and Quakenbrück had some easy points, because we didn't defend that good anymore."
