CSU Asesoft Ploiesti put up a brave fight but lost 86-79 at Belgacom Liege in the EuroChallenge on Tuesday evening.
The Belgians, who got 26 points from Michael Green, clinched a spot in the Last 16 of the competition with the victory.
The result also sealed a place in the next round for Enisey Krasnoyarsk (3-2).
An upset looked as if it might be on the cards when the Romanian team finished the first half on a 7-0 run for a 41-39 lead over Belgacom.
The hosts went back in front in the third quarter but Ploiesti stayed within striking distance and went to the final period behind 53-49.
A Catalin Burlacu lay-up trimmed the deficit to 53-51 at the beginning of the fourth quarter only for four straight points by Josh Duncan to make it 57-51 in favour of Belgacom.
Alex Ruoff then buried a three-pointer to extend the advantage to nine.
Ploiesti continued to battle but weren't able to pull even and ended up falling by seven.
Burlacu had 10 points and 12 rebounds in defeat.
Vladimir Arnautovic, Ploiesti Coach:
"First of all, congratulations to Liège. They played a good game overall. I had a big man injured before the game, a guy who can play some minutes and with the foul trouble our players got in the second half, he could have provided us a good solution. As for the game, Liège started very well but we were able to react and to finish strongly the first half. While, it was a balanced third quarter, Liège came up big in the final period via three-point shots very important from Banks and Ruoff. All in all, congratulations to Liège for their qualification."
Dario Gjergja, Belgacom Liège Coach:
"We started the game very well but then Ploiesti reacted and came back in the game and even took the lead at the end of the first half. In the second half, we played a better game, more organised with good shot selection and a great offensive level. A very good win, but a team win. Everybody in this group brings something of his own to improve the general level of this team. However, we still have a very important game against Krasnoyarsk next win to play the 1st place of this group. And then we are looking forward to resting a little bit."
Guy Muya, Belgacom Guard:
"As the coach said, it is a team win. We know that our strenghts are our defense and our running offense. We used those qualities tonight against a very good Romanian team. We did the most important in qualifying for the next round, now we need to focus on our championship game on sunday at Leuven and then we will think of the game versus Krasnoyarsk for the lead of this group".
