Dexia Mons-Hainaut claimed a resounding victory over Cedevita Zagreb on the last night of Group D action in the EuroChallenge.
Arik Shivek's team won 85-64 but finished third behind Proteas EKA AEL.
Both teams had 3-3 records, but Proteas' big win last week over the Belgians gave them a superior goal differential in the meetings between the two and thus earned them a trip to the Last 16.
Dexia at least gave their fans reason to believe that the Belgian title is a strong possibility because they blew away Cedevita, who would have advanced with a victory.
On top 21-16 at the end of the opening quarter, Dexia all but put the result beyond doubt by outscoring the visitors from Croatia 25-10 in the second period to lead 46-26 at half-time.
Brandon Costner had 17 points and Ben Ebong 13 with 10 rebounds for Dexia.
The defeat will be a tough pill to swallow for Cedevita because they would have won a potential tie-breaker with Proteas, the team that finished second with a 3-3 record.
Proteas lost their game at Elan Chalon, 81-74.
Cedevita player Srdan Subotic:
"In the first half, the team was nowhere, and the issue of the game was already unfavorable to us.We gave our hosts a lot of possibilities for playing very fast, and it was very difficult for us to keep in the swim. With twenty points down,it was not easy to play our game, and Mons provided the opportunity to be full in self-confidence..."
Cedevita head coach Slobodan Subotic:
"Despite the fact we already lost at home against Chalon, I thought we were in luck's way if we had won in Mons, but we began the game calamitously, with bad stats in the shoots at three points, and also a lot of mistakes, especially turnovers. Moreover,we were dominated in rebounds and gave our opponents second chances, and in such conditions,we were unable to claim something positive.
Congratulations to Mons which played very well, even if the team is also eliminated..."
Dexia player Alex Libert:
"As we did against Chalon and Limassol,we've played very well at home, but it wasn't enough to reach the second round, because we were very bad three times away...
"Tonight,we made a good job in rebounding, and also in the control of the game with more than twenty assists;that's to say we played collectively without pause, and it's a good thing to finish like that..."
Dexia head coach Arik Shivek:
"We played very hard and well, so much defensively that offensively, and by the way we controlled ourselves and the game, and it's very important in basketball when you take your courage in both hands to succeed in doing something well.
"In winning this game,I think it will put trust in the group, because we have now three very important games in cup of Belgium and also in the championship.
"For the future, it was iinteresting to win, because, really,we were very bad away in the Eurochallenge. Night and day..."
