GAME REPORT

Hot-Shooting Akerboom Leads EiffelTowers Past Apoel

EiffelTowers Den Bosch defeated Apoel 82-74 to earn a trip to the Last 16 of the EuroChallenge.

The Dutch team bounced back from an 81-66 defeat to Apoel on December 9 to win three EuroChallenge games in a row and finish second in Group H.

Last week's 74-70 victory at French leaders Strasbourg was huge, but so was the second game against Apoel.

That's because a loss to the Cypriot club would have allowed Strasbourg to leapfrog Den Bosch into second place and thus knock the Dutch team out of the competition.

As it was, EiffelTowers led by as many as 15 points early in the fourth quarter on a shot by Jerome Beasley before easing to an eight-point triumph.

Had Don Beck's side won by 16, they would have finished first ahead of Apoel as both sides finished with 4-2 records.

Beasley and Anthony Richardson each had 17 points while Dutchman Kees Akerboom led the way with 20.

Akerboom was a scintillating four of six from long range.

Sullivan Phillips scored a game-high 16 points for first-place Apoel.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes EiffelTowers Den Bosch vs. Apoel

Apoel head coach Stylandes:
"Our target was to defend the 14 point lead. We did that and ended up first in our group. I do not know whether that is to our advantage in the next fase, but we came through. We won some tough games and that isn't luck. We congratulate EiffelTowers on their achievement."

EiffelTowers head coach Beck:
"‘I'm extremely proud of our achievement. The dynamics in our team is sometimes a little unconventional but our defensive and offensive execution was as good as we've played this season. I think Anthony and Kees were great, and our bigs did well too. We're going to take two days off and enjoy this win immensely."

Apoel player Gerben van Dorpe:
"We wanted to win this game but that is never easy away from home against a strong side. We're happy to be in the next round. That's where our focus lies now."

EiffelTowers player Jerome Beasley:
"We executed well offensively and defensively and wil try to continue that in the next round. We need to improve defensively because we've got tremendous offensive weapons on all positions."
