BCM Gravelines Dunkerque won at home against Lokomotiv Kuban on Tuesday but missed out on a place in the Last 16 of the EuroChallenge.
Clinton Johnson scored a game-high 30 points as Gravelines prevailed 77-68 to improve to 4-2 in Group A.
However, BG Göttingen lost at home to Buducnost to leave all three sides with 4-2 records.
That meant that goal differential in the games between the three teams was used to determine the order of finish and Gravelines finished third behind Group A winners Göttingen and second-place Buducnost.
Lokomotiv hadn't won any of their five games in the EuroChallenge, leading to the departures of players.
But the Russian team played with a sense of purpose and even led 64-61 early in the fourth quarter.
Demetris Nichols drilled a three-pointer to spark a 14-0 Gravelines run and they stayed on top the rest of the way.
James Gist finished with 10 points and nine rebounds in defeat.
Saso Filipovski, Lokomotiv-Kuban head coach:
"We stayed in the game, the score was up and down. We made some tough shots but finally we had problems defensively. We couldn’t stop Clinton Johnson who had a great night! And at the end of the game, we missed some opportunities like the 6 free throws in a row."
Gerald Green, Lokomotiv-Kuban player:
"We didn’t make stops defensively. Clinton Johnson had a pretty good game. There is lot of things we went over in practice but we didn’t execute in the game. We need to work hard in practice to get better and keep our heads up!"
Christian Monschau, BCM Gravelines Dunkerque head coach:
"The last game in this Eurochallenge should have been us against Göttingen. Because there were no motivation for both team tonight besides work for our next French game. Finally we have three teams with four wins in this cup but only two are going to the next round. And it is a lack of motivation of one team who deny Gravelines for the TOP 16!"
Clinton Johnson, BCM Gravelines Dunkerque player:
"This game was very important for us. We knew that no matter what happened it was out of our hands. But we wanted to prepare for the Nancy game. So we really want to go out and put focus on defense. We lost a couple games but we still have our confidence!"
