GAME REPORT

Dream Start To Europe For MEG Göttingen

Chris Oliver poured in 22 points and corralled 11 rebounds to lead Germans MEG Göttingen to a season-opening 88-76 victory at Lokomotiv Kuban in EuroChallenge Group A.

Playing in a European competition for the first time, Göttingen rode the momentum of their first road win of the season in their domestic league at Mitteldeutscher BC over the weekend to an historic triumph in Russia.

John Patrick's Violets seized the initiative in the first quarter.

Trailing 10-4, the visitors reeled off 17 unanswered points.

Taylor Rochestie had seven points while Christopher McNaughton and Dwayne Anderson poured in four apiece in the run.

By half-time, the lead had ballooned to 50-28 with Oliver's 17 points leading the way for Göttingen.

After going in front by as many as 24 points in the third quarter, Göttingen allowed Lokomotiv Kuban to get as close as 81-70.

The German outfit held on, though, for a decisive victory.

Aleksandar Capin had 19 points to lead Lokomotiv Kuban in defeat.

Göttingen won the rebounding battle 38-27 and also came up with 13 steals to the home side's nine.

Ben Jacobson and Oliver each had three steals for the winners.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes Lokomotiv Kuban vs. MEG Göttingen

MEG Gottingen head coach John Patrick:

"We were preparing before this match and at first we were ready to play against Chapin. At first half of the game we were playing much better than at the second one. But our team is very young and we let Loko players to take the initiative. Fortunately, we have won."

MEG Gottingen player Dwayne Andersson:
"Today we played very well in defence and it was our privilege. During the second half opponents started playing quicker and we in turn were getting tired. Today we have a great victory, because it was our first success in the EuroChallenge"

Lokomotiv Kuban head coach Sasho Filipovski:
"Today our rival played bravely in the defence and pressed us on every attack. Our team couldn't act resistance. We have shown a good basketball only in the last quarter, but it wasn't enough to cover our previous mistakes. Besides our guys lacked Pero Antic and Krivosheev and Savenkov came to the court being sick. It's one of the main reasons of our loss."

Lokomotiv Kuban player Alexander Chapin:
" We had little time for reabilitation after "Khimki". And we were tired. We must improve our play in defence. Today we were playing as we must play just in the last ten minutes."
