|Sylvia Fowles sparked her team with a double-double|
Spartak Moscow Region laid down a marker with a 90-79 win in the first leg of their EuroLeague Women quarter-final play-off against Fenerbahce.
Sylvia Fowles and Diana Taurasi teamed up to dominate the visitors, with Taurasi collecting 28 points and Fowles adding 18 points and 12 rebounds.
It was a Fowles lay-up midway through the first quarter that sparked a 23-6 Spartak run, and they were able to comfortably hold Fener at arm's length the rest of the way.
Nicole Powell led Fener with 25 points while Nevriye Yilmaz added 22.
Spartak Moscow Region - Vidnoje head coach Pokey Chatman:
I would like to congratulate my players and especially Taurasi, who is without doubt the best player in the world and Sylvia who is getting to be the top center in women's basketball. We need to concentrate for the next game since Fenerbache is one of the best teams in Europe
Spartak power forward Janel McCarville:
We did what we had to do to win a very good opponent. Now all we need to do is to execute our game plan in Turkey and reach the Final Four.
Fenerbache head coach Haydar Kemal Atesi:
Congratulations to my players for a great effort but mainly congratulations to Spartak. They are the best team in Europe and the fact that we are not that deep in our bench makes it difficult to win in Russia. Hopefully in Turkey we will do better and force game 3.
