Spartak Put Away Gritty Szeviép In Fourth Quarter

06.01.2010

Spartak Moscow Region shut down upset-minded Szeviép in the fourth quarter and pulled away for 77-58 victory in their EuroLeague Women Group D clash.

In a game originally scheduled for early November that had to be postponed following the tragic death of Spartak CEO and general manager, Shabtai Von Kalmanovic, Diana Taurasi came up with 22 points and 11 rebounds for the winners.

Standout point guard Sue Bird also played for the first time this season for Spartak and had seven points, four assists and three steals.

Bird, a member of Spartak's three title-winning sides, signed a contract over the Christmas break that will see her finish the campaign with the Russian giants.

Hungarians Szeviép played hard and with determination and only trailed 58-51 after a three-pointer from Olena Zherzherunova.

Taurasi went to the other end and buried a three-ball for a 61-51 lead at the end of the third quarter.

When play resumed, both teams went ice cold for nearly two and a half minutes before Zherzherunova drew a foul and made one of two free-throws.

Spartak then lowered the boom.

Anete Jekabsone-Zogota drilled a shot from the arc and Taurasi intercepted a Zherzherunova pass and drove in for a lay-up for a 66-52 advantage.

Spartak ended up outscoring Szeviép 16-7 over the final 10 minutes.

Szeviép are still in good shape with respect to making the play-offs as they, Lotos Gdynia and Tarbes each have two wins with two rounds remaining.

If the three sides finish leven on points, Szeviép are set to clinch fourth and the last play-off place on goal differential.

Emöke Füresz had 16 points while Vaida Sipaviciute and Zherzherunova each had 15 points.
