Slow Start Dooms Brno

Spartak Moscow Region moved into first place in Group D by beating Frisco Sika Brno for the second time this season.

In a difficult season for the Russian team following the sudden death of owner, CEO and general manager Shabtai von Kalmanovic, Spartak put forth another spirited performance and won for the fifth time in as many games, 82-65.

Diana Taurasi led the way with 23 points and her fellow Team USA star Sylvia Fowles added 18 with nine rebounds.

Spartak wasted no time in establishing control against the Czech giants.

Pokey Chatman's team needed just over five minutes to claim a 15-2 lead.

With the defense making life miserable for Jan Bobrovksy's side, Spartak got seven points from Fowles and six from Taurasi.

Brno snapped out of their early doldrums with a 7-0 spurt.

Dewanna Bonner and Petra Kulichová scored consecutive baskets and Jelena Skerovic capped the run with a three-pointer to reduce the arrears to 15-9.

Brno couldn't stop Spartak, though, at least not on this night.

Trailing 26-15, the Brno fans watched in awe as Anete Jekabsone-Zogota scored the first seven points of the second quarter to spark a 9-0 that left the visitors on top, 35-15.

Brno clawed the deficit back to 42-29 only for a Fowles jumper to make it 44-29 at half-time.

In the third quarter, Brno battled and got as close as nine when Taj McWilliams scored to make it 46-37.

Spartak were never in danger of losing control, though, with a Taurasi three-ball giving them a 63-47 lead heading to the last quarter.

They went in front by more than 20 points in the fourth quarter before settling for a 17-point victory.

Chatman's team out-rebounded Brno 42-37.

Hana Horakova finished with 16 points for Brno, who dropped to 4-2 in Group D.
