GAME REPORT

Prague Do The Double Over Bourges

ZVVZ USK Prague blew open a close game in the third quarter and rolled to victory over Bourges Basket in the Czech Republic.

Led by Lindsay Whalen's 18 points, Prague prevailed in the EuroLeague Women clash, 70-47.

By beating Bourges for the second time this season, Prague tightened their grip on second place in Group C.

They are now 4-2 while Bourges are 2-4.

Bourges coach Pierre Vincent, who led France to the gold medal at the EuroBasket Women this year, would have liked his side's position when they were knotted at 32-32 with 6:48 to go in the third quarter.

That's when the wheels came off for the French team.

Sonja Kireta hit a jump shot and Whalen followed with a three-point play for a 37-32 Prague advantage.

After Katerina Elhotova made one of two free-throws, Sandra Le Drean added a pair from the charity stripe.

Kireta, a former player at Bourges who reached the EuroLeague Women Final Four under Vincent, capped the 11-0 run with a three-point play.

The run had spanned just under three minutes.

Bourges got give straight points in reply from Ilona Burgrová, but in truth,  they never recovered.

Whalen made two free-throws, Cathrine Kraayeveld hit a jumper and Elhotova sank two more free-throws before finishing the quarter with a lay-up to make it 51-37 in favor of Prague.

The points surge carried over into the fourth quarter with a Kireta jump shot and a three-pointer by Kraayeveld extending the lead to 56-37.

Lubor Blazek's side pulled away for a decisive triumph.

Prague out-rebounded Bourges 42-33.

They were also much better shooting the ball on the night, hitting 20 of 39 (51.2%) inside the arc compared to Bourges' 17 of 54 (31.4%).

At the free-throw line, Prague made 18 of 20 while Bourges were seven of nine.

Kireta and Kraayeveld scored 10 points apiece.

Bourges were led by Burgrova's nine points.

COACH QUOTES

Prague vs. Bourge quotes

Pierre Vincent, Bourges Basket Coach:

"We lost and therefore I'm sad, it is a bad day for us. In order to win a game we need to score some points and it was our weak spot today, as we missed shots from open positions as well as a few lay ups. It was a difficult game for us but I am very proud of my team that they kept fighting tilll the end and did not give up even when the game was decided. Better days will come, I believe."

Ilona Burgrová, Bourges Basket:

"We did not profit from open shots we were supposed to score from. And, it is always hard to play at Folimanka gym.  Plus, Prague did exceptionally good job in defence tonight which made our shots even harder."

Lubor Blažek, ZVVZ USK Prague Coach

"This victory is a very precious one for us. We knew that it is very important to win this game on our home court as we play two following games away. Games against Bourges are always hard for us and I am very happy that we succeeded in it. I appreciate the good work of my team in defence and I am excited that we broke the spell of never before winning two EuroLeague games in a row - this is our first time."

Cathrine Kraayeveld, ZVVZ USK Prague

"It was a big fight tonight, we knew it would be a hard game. The game started at a slow pace since the beginning (as it was visible from half-time score 29:25) so the game was very defensively oriented. Our team did good job, because we played as a team -which is something Bourges team is good at - so I feel happy for it."
