Good Angels Kosice pulled clear in the final seven minutes to top KSSSE AZS-PWSZ Gorzow 70-65 in EuroLeague Women Group C.
When Justyna Zurowska made a jump-shot with 7:05 to go, Gorzow had closed to within two at 59-57, but Kosice responded with a 6-0 run, top and tailed with Angel McCoughtry lay-ups, to create some breathing space.
After Samantha Richards and Candice Dupree had traded single free throws, Liudmila Sapova made three in a row from the charity stripe for Gorzow to close the gap once again to five, 66-61, with 3:36 to go.
As the tension rose, neither team could make a basket for over two minutes, with both Richards and Sapova missing three-pointers that could have put Gorzow right back in the mix.
The drought was ended when McCoughtry made the second of a pair of free throws, followed by a Anastasia Kostaki three-pointer that put Kosice up 70-61 with 22 seconds to go, ending Gorzow's challenge.
McCoughtry was the difference with 25 points, making nine of 13 from two-point range, and adding eight rebounds.
Dupree added 13, while Linda Frolich collected 11 points and 11 rebounds and Luisa Michulkova also scored 11 for Kosice.
Sapova led Gorzow with 15 points while Richards had 12 and Yuliya Dureika 11.
Kosice improve to 2-3, while Gorzow slump to the bottom of the group at 1-4.
Štefan Svitek, Košice Coach:
"A lot of lost balls meant that we could not move away from our opponent. It was important for us that in the poor parts of the game, we were able to mobilize and we don't allow the opponent to turn the match in their favor."
Linda Frohlich, Košice Player:
"I am happy that we won. We prepared for this match, but there are many small things which we have work on to win the next week."
Dariusz Maciejewski, Gorzow Coach:
"It was a good match on defense, and in attack. It was typical combative match. However, I have to congratulate Košice for victory."
Samantha Jane Richards, Gorzow player:
"We're frustrated that we lost. It was an important match for advancing from the group. Košice played very well and we made a few mistakes in a bad time. That cost us the match."
