Remarkable EuroLeague Women rookies Rivas Ecópolis rocked MKB Euroleasing Sopron on Wednesday night to stretch their unbeaten run to four games in Group C.
The fantastic first-timers to Europe's elite club competition prevailed 70-63 with Crystal Langhorne pouring in 22 points and hauling in nine rebounds and Catherine Joens scoring 16.
USA international Langhorne hit some big shots in this contest, including the go-ahead jumper late in the third quarter which made it 47-46 and took her points haul to 16.
None of Joens' baskets were more important than the one which followed a Maja Miljkovic's three-pointer for MKB.
That trey trimmed the deficit to 57-56, but the 28-year-old Joens went to the other and scored for a 59-56 lead and shortly after, Anna Cruz's jumper put the visitors in front by five.
After two Amber Holt free-throws closed the gap to 61-58, Langhorne made a lay-up with just under two minutes to play to restore Rivas' five-point cushion.
Langhorne and Joens each made two free-throws the next two trips down the floor to extend the lead to nine before Rivas finished with a seven-point triumph.
Joens finished with 16 points for Rivas while Holt had nine points and 10 rebounds for Sopron.
The Hungarians were led in scoring by Tijana Krivacevic's 15.
Rivas are now officially the surprise package of the EuroLeague Women and they will go for a fifth consecutive triumph next week at home to French giants Bourges.
Székely Norbert (Head Coach of MKB-EUROLEASING SOPRON):
"The Spanish team is a real rainbow in the Euroleague! Congrats, they played very well. We didn't play in good rhythm against their zone defense, and didnt make enough fast breaks, thats why we lost this game."
Javier Fort (Head Coach of RIVAS ECOPOLIS):
"In the third quarter we had to use zone defense because our lot of personal fouls, which was a surprise for Sopron. With this we could break their rythm, and at the end we had few lucky shots too."
Catherine Joens (RIVAS ECOPOLIS):
"Our power is that we have a lot of good players, also on the bench. It was the key for this victory!"
Amber Holt (MKB-EUROLEASING SOPRON):
"I have to say, Rivas played very well! Their zone defense killed our game!"
